It doesn't matter if your camera is on or connected when you fire up the utility — if you turn it on after you start EOSInfo, the utility will recognize the camera.
I have written to the utility's author to see if there's anything new.

I tried downloading the old tool and I get a failure notice — I don't know if you can even download the old mac tool any more. This page only works under Internet Explorer and over Windows system because it uses an ActiveX controller to pull out the information from the camera.
It's been a long time since my last post. At this time, I don't have any plans for creating a Mac version, largely due to time constraints. Well there's not really much to update — but this is a older post that continues to have lots of hits, so I thought I'd at least re-post it in case there are those of you who haven't seen it since it was posted in I mean the first higher one.

Mac users should continue using the 40DShutterCount utility. Mac 40D Shutter Count. I wish Canon and other manufacturers could release this to the public so we can know when it's time to have that service center call and even when we buy some second hand stuff. Will the software work with it?

As it turns out, you have to power-cycle the 5DMkII before the shutter count value updates itself. This is a bare utility, so there's no setup program and none of the required support files are included - but they all should have been 40dshuttercoutn when you installed the EOS Utility.
